Which exam is right for me?

Every learner is different. We start by placing you on the Trinity ISE pathway by default, and then help you decide whether to stay on that route or switch to Cambridge or IELTS as your goals become clearer.

Trinity ISE A2โ€“C1
Integrated skills, continuous learning
Best if you want an exam that reflects your everyday classwork and balanced skills development. This is the default exam for Dorset College ELE learners (ISE Foundation, I, II, III).
Cambridge English B2โ€“C1
B2 First & C1 Advanced
Suited to learners who want a more traditional, academically focused exam with strong global recognition for study and work.
IELTS B2+
Academic & migration
Ideal if you are planning to apply to university or need proof of English for immigration or professional registration outside Ireland.

How exam choice works at Dorset

You do not have to decide everything on day one. We use your level, progress and goals to help you make an informed choice.

1
Placement & default exam
When you enrol, you complete a placement test and join a CEFR class. You are placed on the Trinity ISE exam pathway by default.
2
Integrated preparation
Exam-style tasks are included in your weekly lessons. You complete mock exams and receive feedback from your teacher and Academic Team.
3
Discuss your options
If you prefer a more academic or university-focused exam, you can discuss Cambridge or IELTS with the Director of Studies or Academic Team.
4
Confirm your exam
Together we confirm the most appropriate exam and level for you, based on your CEFR level, progress, future plans and visa needs.

Many learners stay on the Trinity ISE route and sit the exam on site at Dorset College. Others choose Cambridge or IELTS for specific academic or migration purposes โ€“ we support all three choices.
