How progression works at Dorset College

From placement test to your next level

When you arrive, you take a placement test and meet our academic team. We place you in the class that best matches your current English level and your goals (work, study, exam or everyday use).

Moving up a level is based on a combination of evidence, not just one test:

  • ๐Ÿ“ Weekly checks โ€“ short tests and classroom tasks to see how you are progressing with the syllabus.
  • ๐Ÿ“Š Mid-course assessments โ€“ usually every 12 weeks to review overall progress.
  • ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ Teacher recommendation โ€“ based on your participation, homework and confidence using English.
  • ๐ŸŽ“ Exam results (where relevant) โ€“ external exam scores can support progression decisions.
โฑ๏ธ Progression speeds vary. Many learners complete a level in around one 12-week cycle, but some need longer and others may move more quickly. Your teacher and academic team will discuss your pathway with you.

  • What if the hardest part of learning a language isnโ€™t the grammarโ€ฆ but the self-doubt?

Your mindset and emotions shape how you show up, how long you stick with it, and how much you grow.

This post is your reminder:

Believe in your ability to change.
Feel the discomfort, and keep going.

Fluency is as much about courage as it is about vocabulary!
